The town of Nakhon Pathom (‘First City’), situated on Highway 4 some 56 km (35 miles) west of Bangkok, occupies the site of one of the regions’ earliest settlements, rising to prominence as the capital of a Mon Kingdom during the Dvarati period (6th – 11th centuries). A couple of hours sightseeing are sufficient, either on a day trip from Bangkok or on the way to Kanchanaburi.

Phra Pathom Chedi
In the heart of town, this ranks as the world’s tallest Buddhist monument at 120m (393ft) high. It is also one of Thailand’s most important places of worship, as reputedly the site where Buddhism first took root on what is now Thai soil. The original Mon-period chedi was badly damaged by the Burmese in 1057 and the huge bell-shaped monument seen today dates from the 19th century. The impressive building is raised on a series of terraces and surrounded by cloisters with chapels at the four cardinal points.
