Despite its status as a moderately large provincial centre and transport hub, Lampang, 100km southeast of Chiang Mai, preserves traces its past, although the town is not as old-world as its famous horse-drawn carriages might suggest. None the less, a trip is recommended if time permits. On the northern edge of town, on the right bank of the Wang River, Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao is a fine temple complex displaying both Thai and Burmese architectural styles. According to legend, the Emerald Buddha was enshrined here for 32 years in the mid-15th century. Among other city temples are Wat Phra Fang, with a tall chedi unusually surrounded by seven small chapels, and Wat Sri Chum, a good example of Burmese-style religious architecture. The most magnificent temple in the area, however is Wat Phra That Lamphang Luang, dating back to AD496 but completely rebuilt in the 18th century. Located off Highway 1 some 15km south of Lampang, it is difficult to reach by public transport, but the effort is more than worth it as this walled temple is one of the finest and best -reserved examples of Lanna style.
An excursion to Lampang can also include a visit to the Young Elephant Training Centre, 25km west of town of Highway 11. This is the most authentic of several elephant camps giving shows of how young elephants are trained for work in the teak forests.
