One of the most pleasant excursion and a rewarding trip for history enthusiasts is to Lamphun, 26km south of Chiang Mai. Part of the road is lined with huge trees which give an idea of how densely forested the area once was. Lamphun is the site of Haripunchai, the capital of a Mon kingdom founded in AD660 and defeated by King Mengrai in the late 13th century. The small modern town is unremarkable except for Wat Phra That Haripunchai, superb in architectural beauty and historical interest. The temple was originally built in 1044, although the various buildings in the large compound, dominated by 50m chedi, are of varying dates. Near the temple is the small but well planned National Museum.
On the west side of town is Wat Ku Kut (also known as Wat Chama Devi), an important temple for its two ancient chedis, dating probably from the early 13th century and regarded as the only surviving examples of Dvaravati architecture. The taller of the two, Suwan Chang Kot, is in the form of a stepped pyramid 21m high and 15.4m wide, while the smaller Ratana Chedi is 11.5m high and octagonal in shape.
